Controls and BAS hiring guide: skills employers should screen for

Building automation and controls roles vary by platform, programming depth and field versus office balance. Here is how to screen for real fit.

Platform experience matters

BAS work is tied to platforms. A technician fluent in one front end and controller family can usually learn another, but the ramp-up time is real. List the platforms you install or service and say which are required versus trainable.

Separate the role levels

  • Installer / technician: wiring, terminations, point-to-point checkout
  • Service technician: troubleshooting sequences, sensors, actuators and networks
  • Programmer / engineer: database builds, graphics, sequences of operation
  • Project lead: scheduling, submittals and commissioning coordination

What to screen for

  • Reading and interpreting sequences of operation
  • Network fundamentals relevant to BACnet or similar protocols
  • Mechanical knowledge of the HVAC systems being controlled
  • Clear documentation and customer communication

Common hiring mistakes

Asking for every platform and every protocol shrinks the pool to nearly zero. Pick the two or three things the person must do in the first ninety days and build the brief around them.
